DESCRIPTION:Lakes: the lifeblood of our planet\nLakes are one of the most vital natural resources on our planet. They serve as a crucial source of fresh water\, supporting drinking water supplies\, agriculture\, and industry. \nLakes also play a key role in maintaining biodiversity\, offering a habitat for countless species of fish\, plants\, and wildlife. \nBeyond their ecological significance\, lakes contribute to climate regulation by keeping the planet cool\, absorbing the floodwater and storing carbon. \nAdditionally\, they provide recreational and economic opportunities\, attracting tourism\, fishing\, and other activities that support local communities. \nBut lakes are affected by a combination of overuse\, pollution and climate change. Lake pollution is frequently caused by inflows from fertilizers\, contaminants and solid waste being dumped directly\, or flushed into lakes via rivers\, and this is worsened by global warming – leading\, for instance\, to more frequent and intense floods. \nThe water levels of lakes are also changing dramatically. Rising temperatures and changes to cloud cover\, which are leading to decreasing ice cover\, are increasing the rate of water evaporation. \nWe need to act now. \nThis first World Lake Day\, let’s be aware of the problem lakes are facing. \nLet’s protect them today for a sustaining life tomorrow. \n\nDid you know?\n\n\n\nNatural and artificial lakes contain more than 90% of the fresh water on the surface of the Earth.\nUp to 80 % of global wastewater is estimated to enter water bodies untreated with adverse impacts on human and ecosystem health.\nRain washes the nutrients in fertilizer into waterways and lakes which can lead to damaging algal blooms\, which are predicted to increase by at least 20% by 2050.\nIn half the world’s countries one or more types of freshwater ecosystems are degraded\, including rivers\, lakes and aquifers.

This is a new issue added to the barriers to accessing new technologies\, especially in rural areas\, excluding Indigenous from full participation in AI-related processes. \nTo unlock AI’s full potential\, Indigenous Peoples must be respected as rights-holders\, co-creators\, and decision-makers. Let’s leave no one behind. #IndigenousPeoples \n\nWe need indigenous communities for a better world\nThere are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6 per cent of the world’s population\, but account for at least 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7\,000 languages and represent 5\,000 different cultures. \nIndigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social\, cultural\, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Despite their cultural differences\, Indigenous Peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. \nIndigenous Peoples have sought recognition of their identities\, their way of life and their right to traditional lands\, territories and natural resources for years. Yet\, throughout history\, their rights have been violated. Indigenous Peoples today\, are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. The international community now recognizes that special measures are required to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures and way of life. \nIn order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups\, every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples\, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.

DESCRIPTION:Event details\nEmphasising the interconnectedness of each individual to each other and their environment\, this exhibit focuses on the power of each person to initiate positive change. A joint initiative of SGI and Earth Charter International. \nThe 25-panel Seeds of Hope and Action (SOHA) exhibition introduces a positive vision for sustainable living that can contribute to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It includes panels portraying six individuals from South Sudan to Lebanon and Brazil who have successfully taken action for change. \nThe initial section introduces the idea of interconnection with inspiring quotes from different spiritual and faith traditions. There are panels on climate change and the SDGs and QR codes provide links to further information for online use. An interactive panel collects viewers’ ideas for action inspired by the exhibition. It also introduces the #SeedsofHopeandAction campaign that encourages individuals to share photos and videos of their actions toward the implementation of the SDGs and related Earth Charter principles on social media. \nDuring the day – exhibitions and talks\nThe exhibition is open to the public to visit from 9am to 5pm and takes place on the ground floor of the Department of Environment and Geography building on Campus West\, University of York. \nFrom 1:20pm each day Monday through Thursday\, there will be a series of talks and activities from academics\, businesses and environmental groups\, responding to the themes of hope\, action and the SDGs\, also free and open to the public: no booking required. DESCRIPTION:Join our weekly Nature Rides this Spring! We’ll explore the riverside\, meadows\, parks and woods in the south of York. \nSpend an enjoyable hour with us on a leisurely ride. We’ll relax together in fresh spring landscapes. We’ll be energised by sunshine\, the smells of new growth\, and the feel of warmer air on our skin. We’ll enjoy budding trees\, emerging spring blossom\, and pause to listen to birdsong. \nWe hope you’ll join us regularly and notice how the natural world changes through this beautiful season of renewal. \nYou’ll get some gentle exercise\, feel happier and healthier\, meet friendly people\, discover new green routes\, enjoy learning about nature and improve your cycling confidence and skills. \nHope you can join us! \nPracticalities\nMeet at 12:30pm in the area in the middle of Millennium Bridge. We’ll be there from 12:15pm. Look for the friendly people in purple York Bike Belles tops! \nPlease allow 1 hour for the Ride. It will take place at a steady pace\, with pauses to enjoy the nature around us. We usually cover between 3 and 4 miles in this time. Group numbers are limited to 8 people. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome. Please note you do not need to book a space for a child in a trailer or child seat. \nFor a Ride\, please bring a roadworthy bike and helmet. We can lend you a standard bike for the Ride\, with at least one week’s notice. Please note that it is a condition of our insurance that all riders on led rides wear a helmet. Do let us know in advance if you would like us to lend you a helmet. \nEveryone is welcome on a Ride! If you have difficulties pedalling ‘standard’ bikes or you have reduced mobility\, you can book a dedicated Cycling Without Age Ride on a comfortable passenger bike. If you don’t feel confident cycling for 30 minutes or so\, we can also offer a 1 hour confidence-building buddy session. \nPre-booking for bike hire or a buddy session is essential.
