Nepal Reforestation Project
Context
The Karthali planting site is located in the mountainous Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal’s Bagmati province. The project includes patches of healthy, pine-dominated temperate forests and degraded areas that require restoration.
Bagmati Province in Nepal has many animals and plants protected by native forests. The area provides a habitat for the Muntiacus muntjak, also known as the “barking deer.” When they sense the presence of predators, they emit sounds that resemble a dog barking. The Himalayan bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogenys), or white-cheeked bulbul, is a species of songbird that nests in the native forests at the planting site. Additionally, the Sindhupalchowk region protects the red-headed vulture, Sarcogyps calvus, categorized as critically endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
The Sindhupalchowk District is a highly vulnerable area that frequently experiences earthquakes and landslides, devastatingly affecting nearby communities. These natural disasters have disrupted the lives of the people and caused significant damage to the forests, which are a vital source of subsistence for them.
Project
The reforestation efforts at the Karthali planting site positively impact the nearby communities of Karthali, Jhime, Damre, and Sisne. The local population is comprised mainly of the Tamang and Dalit ethnic groups, predominantly subsistence farmers who grow rice and wheat and raise livestock. The native forests around the area provide the residents with essential resources like fuelwood, livestock fodder, and medicinal and edible plants. Restoring the forest ecosystem helps enhance natural resilience against landslides. Trees and forests prevent landslides by reinforcing soil layers and anchoring the soil to bedrock with their roots. Trees also lower soil moisture levels through interception, evaporation, and transpiration. They are helpful in land reclamation after landslides and can reduce soil erosion while limiting landslide run-out distance.
