The National Climate Change Conference: 2024 Driving Sustainability & achieving net-zero goals

January 25 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The National Climate Change Conference

About the event

At the heart of the UK’s climate strategy is the aim to reach net-zero by 2050 and reduce emissions by 68% by 2030. As we get closer to the latter date, and with major changes to the UK’s approach being made in September 2023, reaching this achievement has become increasingly challenging. While the public sector only accounts for around 2% of UK greenhouse gas emissions, they play a key role in working with other sectors and local communities to cut their emissions.

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme has been a positive step in the right direction with a recent £1.425 billion grant being allocated to reduce public sector building emissions. Yet despite this, the public sector must work collaboratively with private organisations and the general public to encourage the reduction of emissions nationwide.

  • As of 2023, over 300 councils have declared a climate emergency
  • There were 3,271 excess deaths in England and Wales during the five heat-periods of summer 2022, according to the Office for National Statistics
  • Inside Housing found, from a survey of 33 housing associations collectively owning 960,000 homes, that only 186 whole-house retrofits were carried between 2021-22
