Compost for Climate: Nourish the Earth, Empower the Future

International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) returns from May 4–10, 2025, to celebrate the power of composting in building healthier soil, reducing waste, and fighting climate change.

Hosted by the Compost Research & Education Foundation, this annual campaign raises awareness about composting’s critical role in sustainable waste management and regenerative agriculture.

Why Composting Matters More Than Ever

  • Cuts Methane Emissions: Composting food waste keeps it out of landfills, where it would otherwise produce harmful methane gas.

  • Improves Soil Health: Compost enhances soil structure, water retention, and fertility—vital for climate-resilient agriculture.

  • Supports Circular Systems: Turning waste into a resource closes the loop on consumption.

  • Empowers Communities: Home, school, and municipal composting programs engage people of all ages in sustainable action.
