EDF Partners with Aukera for Innovative Solar and Battery Project in Scotland

Root-Power Wins Planning Approval for Battery Storage Facility

EDF has formed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Aukera for the Benthead Solar Farm, a hybrid solar and battery storage project in North Ayrshire, Scotland. This arrangement enables EDF to purchase 100% of the renewable electricity generated by the facility, which features 53.52 megawatts (MW) of solar power combined with a 31 MW battery storage system.

Project Overview

The Benthead project aims to produce over 78.4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year, enough to supply power to more than 25,000 homes. Additionally, it’s projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 17,000 tonnes annually, contributing to goals for net-zero emissions.

Key Features

  • Secured a 15-year Contract for Difference (CfD) as part of Allocation Round 6.
  • Part of Aukera’s plan to grow its 250 MW renewable energy portfolio in the UK.
  • Expected to become operational by 2026.
  • EDF’s PowerShift platform uses AI and real-time analytics to manage exports and optimise energy market participation.
  • Aukera owns and finances the site, backed by a £135 million facility from Deutsche Bank and Rabobank.
  • The project reflects a wider trend 40% of UK renewables in development are now co-located with battery storage.
  • Advisory support from Pexapark signals increasing commercial maturity and sophistication of hybrid asset models.

Strategic Benefits

With a shared 63 MW grid connection, the installation improves strategic control over electricity exports, potentially boosting revenue and grid reliability. This collaboration between EDF and Aukera highlights a rising trend in the renewable energy field integrating storage solutions with generation capabilities to create more adaptable energy systems.
