Tesco and WRAP Urge Global Action to Combat Food Waste Ahead of COP30

Tesco and WRAP have launched a significant initiative aimed at fighting food waste globally ahead of the COP30 climate conference. This collaboration underscores the urgency of addressing food loss, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently, food waste is responsible for approximately 8-10% of global emissions and results in an estimated annual economic loss of $936 billion (£687 billion). Alarmingly, a recent report indicates that 90% of countries have not included food waste reduction in their climate commitments.

The partnership was unveiled during the Climate Innovation Forum, part of the London Climate Action Week. Key aspects of their initiative include:

• Driving policy changes
• Encouraging suppliers and retailers to set measurable waste reduction targets
• Recruiting 50 more international partners to align with Sustainable Development Goal 12.3

The initiative aims to shape government policies on food waste management and highlights the necessity for strong leadership from both businesses and political leaders.
