Jon's Wood, Crook, County Durham

About this project

Jon’s Wood is a new native woodland near Crook, County Durham, covering 10.17 hectares (9.45 hectares net planting). The project has planted Oak, Alder and Birch (23,625 trees in total, planted in summer 2019) and is expected to sequester 7,271 tCO₂e over its lifetime. Alongside carbon removal, the woodland improves habitat connectivity across the surrounding landscape and helps bind soil to reduce erosion during heavy rainfall.

Why we support it

Jon’s Wood is a UK-based project, verified under the Woodland Carbon Code, the UK government-backed standard for woodland carbon projects. We buy directly through Forest Carbon’s Carbon Club, giving us a clear line back to a named, verifiable site rather than a pooled international scheme.

Verification

Jon’s Wood is certified under the Woodland Carbon Code, a quality assurance standard backed by the UK government, with a 100-year crediting period.

Credits from this project are currently issued as Pending Issuance Units (PIUs) rather than fully verified Woodland Carbon Units. This is normal for an actively growing woodland (verification is confirmed in stages as the trees establish), but it does mean these units cannot yet be used to claim carbon neutrality or net-zero status on their own.
